Southern Haunts Devils in the Darkness Alexander S Brown Louise Myers Robert K 9781937929541 Books Reviews

Another great compilation! There are a few that reeled me in. Again I am biased so I have to pick on 2 authors. Angela Lucious's story had me trembling. Alex's story was great....took attachment to it's fullest.
The creaters of the Southern Haunts series has done it again! The series as a whole continues to impress and surpass expectations. For those who love a good ole fashion scare and enjoyed the first book will love sauthern haunts two. Each story captures you from the very begining. Highly reccomend!
A wonderfully dark and intriguing collection of dark and intriguing stories, Devils in the Darkness includes shocks, horror, thought-provoking mystery, prose as smooth as the demon’s dark slither (or “as butter running down hot corn” in J.L. Mulvihill’s opening tale, the Demon of Natchez Trace), classic terrors and even fun.

“I’m a Baptist... So I’m allowed to cuss” declares one character in Phillip Drayer Duncan’s haunting The Misconception about Demons. In the same story, “religion may differ, but in theory our practices and knowledge of demons are the same." Reader beware. Meanwhile in drowned Southern forest land, “white-barked trunks lost most of their branches as they rested knee deep in stagnant water,” evoking a place I’ve never been, where devils may darkly haunt in Melodie Romeo’s The Devil’s Stone. Pamela K. Kinney’s Let Demon Dog’s Lie will keep you far from dark cemeteries at night. And the rest... read them if you dare, but not when the dark wind's blowing.

Disclosure I hosted a blog tour and took forever to get around to reading my copy. I offer my honest review with my apologies for being so slow.
The Demon of the Old Natchez Trace by J L Mulvihill, was an interesting little poem and really well written. It was a little too short for me to fully enjoy.
Battle For Vicksburg by Della West, I really enjoyed this story, I liked the story of a bystander watching an age old battle against the humans vs a demon. It was really well written.
Dediless by Linda DeLeon, was a fun story about a man who makes a deal with the devil then tries to get out of it. I thought it was a great story that was fun and entertaining.
What Goes Round by Herika R. Raymer is one of my favorites in the collection, it’s about a girl who questions her faith and joins a coven with sinister intentions for her, the characters are interesting and the ending was great I didn’t see that coming
Dead End, C.G. Bush is another of my favorites, it involves four friends and supposed haunted place and Halloween. The atmosphere was spooky and tense and I wanted more of the story.
Sorry Charlie by Angela Dalton Lucius is a well written story that’s based on a true story, I really enjoyed the story about a nurse and her “schizophrenic” patient Ann and her demon Charlie.
The Misconception about Demons by Phillip Drayer Duncan is a fun story about a man being chased by a demon and a psychopath with a gun seeking help from three experts, the ending was unexpected and I enjoyed it.
The Blackberry Man by Diane Ward was a good story but not my favorite in the collection.
The Devil’s Stone by Melodie Romeo I liked that it was about another time past and that they explained that this stone was out for blood, overall it was really well written.
And There was Nothing Left but Ash by Miquel L. Viscarra was another really good story, about a woman on a road trip that had a nightmare dripping with blood.
Barred For Life by Louise Myers was a really well written western story, I thought it was going to go one way and it went another.
The Devil’s Doorway by Kalila Smith is another of my favorite in the collection about a homeless mother and her four children who meet a stranger named Hector. Hector is a really well written character and I was glad that he was watching over the family.
What Demons Men Make by Windsong Levitch, was interesting because to fight the demon in this story they needed to bring all religions to defeat it. I enjoyed reading it and hope there is a sequel.
Ancient Blood by Ethan Nahte follows the age old consequence of don’t bring things home or dig them out of ancient cave. I found this story interesting and really well written.
Let Demon Dogs Lie by Pamela K. Kinney, is a cautionary tale about Halloween and why we should always listen to legends, because sometimes those legends are true. I really liked this story, it had a good premise and was written well.
Jack in the Box by H. David Blalock had an interesting premise but was too short for me, I wanted more of the universe and a little more history.
Dorm Rat by E.G. Glover was a good story and was able to care about the hero and the rat that he purchased.
Beleth by Roman Merry had a semi-different take on demonic possession, it was a really well written story and followed the slogan “No Good Deed goes unpunished”
Are You Ready by L. R. Barrett-Durham, amazingly starts with the demons and I like that it gets straight into the spooky demon stuff and explains what happened before. Overall I liked that it was different than the other stories.
Attachment by Alexander S. Brown is an interesting way to end the story segment of the book, it’s about a psychic and a haunted house. It was the perfect way to end the book.

Overall I found that Devils in the Darkness is a wonderful sequel to the Southern Haunts series and hope there is more to them.
