I thought this was a decent book. At worst, it is a quick paced story that you can read through easily. It is a fairly dark and violent story. The description of the book is pretty misleading as to what the book is about. The story has very little to do with child-stealing wolves. My main complaint about the book is that there is no explanation for any of the violence in the story or what anyone's motivations are.Tags : Hold the Dark: A Novel [William Giraldi] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. A terrifying literary thriller set on the Alaskan tundra, about the mystery of evil and mankind's losing battle with nature. At the start of another pitiless winter,William Giraldi,Hold the Dark: A Novel,Liveright,0871406675,Thrillers - General,Families;Alaska;Fiction.,Wilderness areas;Alaska;Fiction.,Wolves;Fiction.,AMERICAN MYSTERY & SUSPENSE FICTION,Alaska,FICTION Literary,FICTION Mystery & Detective Private Investigators,FICTION Noir,FICTION Thrillers General,FICTION Thrillers Suspense,Families,Fiction,Fiction - General,Fiction-Thriller,GENERAL,General Adult,Literary,Modern & contemporary fiction (post c 1945),MysterySuspense,United States,Wilderness areas,Wolves

I am fascinated by the whole question of where man fits in the world of nature, if, in fact, we fit at all, so I loved this book. I also have no problem with pressing my finger on words I don't know in order to more fully understand what the writer is trying to tell me. I loved the writing. I find myself wishing I knew someone else who had read it so I could discuss it with them, and I thought about it for several days after finishing it. The descriptions given of what the book is about are all accurate, although somehow my expectations went one way while the actual narrative went off in a different direction altogether, but that was a pleasant surprise. It makes you think.
Very entertaining... read it in one nite- 3/4 thru , it dawned on me what the unnatural was.... love these frozen tales like this and The Terror etc. it's not really about 4 legged wolves, exclusively. They didn't do the story justice in the tv series. Now, Terror was as good as novel. Many viewers did not even pick up on the shame secret- unfortunately they skirted over it, making the wolf dude center of the story. They pg'd it down. But, ya should watch it - after the easy reading 📚.....
I have a hard time writing reviews. It's so tempting to try to match the author's prose. Or to pick apart inconsistencies, real or imagined. I'm sharing this to say, Hold the Dark isn't for everyone, but it spoke to me.
The book takes place in a town that's neither civilized or wild, but something in between. And the people have been shaped by the world they have to survive in, shaped into something neither human or animal. The cold is a character in Hold The Dark, defining everything everyone does, defining who these people will become all the way down in their souls.
Yes, Hold the Dark may appeal to people who enjoyed No Country For Old Men and Winter's Bone. But it blends its hard-bit realism with an epic sense of mythology. Try keep your mind open. You'll finish this book with a fresh-dug hole in your soul.
Well-written prose is a quality of which I wish to read more, I adore a good story and the color yellow. William Giraldi has combined the age of Columbine with the antiquity of Nature. Set in Alaska, the book introduces us to the lives of wolves. The children of the town have been disappearing, and wolves are assumed the culprit. Evenhanded, action-packed and dangerous, until the book's conclusion. I remember a quote, "Evil is the distortion of love." It says so much. Good luck and enjoy! ---Allen Hagar
The book is a quick read at just over 200 pages which creates a fast paced story that kept me interested. The downside to that is there's no real character development or explanation for anything that takes place. This book was a collection of intense events that don't really tie together at all. The ending seemed rushed as if the author realized his blunders and decided to call it quits rather than tie up 200 pages of nothing but loose ends. Overall, it might be worth a read because the scenarios themselves are interesting... and it's a fast enough read that you don't hate yourself for losing countless hours of your life for a less than mediocre attempt at a conclusion.
I watched the film on Netflix before reading the book and decided I needed to read to get more of an understanding. I was definitely impressed that the movie was pretty in line with the book but still both were super cryptic until the very end. I think overall it definitely has a lot of parallels to darkness. I think both film and book are okay, I just wished there was a cliff notes to see what (if any) other underlying concepts the writer is trying to get at.
I saw that Netflix was making a film adaptation of this novel and the premise sold me on it. I read a few reviews comparing Giraldi's prose to Cormac McCarthy and figured I'd read this before the film premiered and was blown away. It's a short read, made all the shorter by the fact that I literally could NOT put the book down. It's violent, disturbing, twisted, dark, and, yet, elegantly written. A truly transformative reading experience from a voice I look forward to hearing more from.
